Can you believe that today, November 18, 2009, is Mickey Mouse’s 81st birthday? According to Disney’s character archives, Mickey Mouse first made his debut…
in “Steamboat Willie” at the Colony Theatre in New York City on November 18, 1928, Mickey went on to star in over 120 different cartoons.
“Steamboat Willie” was released on November 18, 1928, however according to Wikipedia, two other cartoons were released beforehand, “Plane Crazy” and “The Gallopin’ Gaucho”.
Mickey Mouse has had a few makeovers throughout the years, but has aged considerably well for being 81 years old don’t you think?
We will definitely be seeing some changes soon though. The New York Times published an article earlier this month, After Mickey’s Makeover, Less Mr. Nice Guy, which discusses Disney introducing a new look and attitude for Mickey in an upcoming new video game, Epic Mickey. Their intent is to introduce a more modern and hip Mickey than a corporate image.
It’s just amazing to think that from this little, sweet, adorable character, Walt Disney built an empire of family entertainment that has spanned over 80 years.

Happy Birthday Mickey! I love seeing how Mickey has evolved over the years. I have to say though, I am not so fond of the updated Micky in the video game…… I think he should stay like he is. He looks good for 81

I agree Tori. It will be interesting to see if this “new” Mickey will adversely affect Disney corporate brand image. Personally, I think Mickey loses his charm with the new makeover.
